Support policy
Perpetual Office releases up to Office 2019 followed the Fixed Lifecycle Policy with five years of Mainstream Support plus five years of Extended Support. From Office LTSC 2021 onward, Microsoft provides five years of Mainstream Support only, with no Extended Support phase. Microsoft 365 Apps follows the Modern Lifecycle Policy and has no fixed end date.
Notes
Office's support length changed fundamentally with Office LTSC 2021, and missing this puts a replacement plan five years out.
Perpetual releases up to Office 2019 received five years of Mainstream Support plus five years of Extended Support — ten years in total. Office LTSC 2021 and 2024 receive five years of Mainstream Support and nothing after that. The official lifecycle tables show both a Mainstream and an Extended column for Office 2019 and earlier, but only a Mainstream column for LTSC releases.
The "End of Support" column on this site is the date all support finally ends: the Extended End Date for Office 2019 and earlier, and the Mainstream End Date for LTSC releases.
Office 2016 and Office 2019 both ended on 14 October 2025, despite being released three years apart — moving from 2016 to 2019 bought no additional time.
Subscription-based Microsoft 365 Apps follows the Modern Lifecycle Policy and shows "In Support" with no fixed end date, so it is not listed in the table above. That does not mean no action is required: staying supported requires keeping up with supported builds, and each update channel defines its own support window per build.
Note also the Windows version requirements: newer Office LTSC releases drop older Windows versions, so an Office upgrade may force a Windows upgrade.
