Support policy
Ruby ships a new minor version every 25 December. A branch first receives normal maintenance (bug fixes and security fixes), then moves to security maintenance (security fixes only), and finally reaches end of life, after which no further patch releases are made.
Notes
A Ruby branch passes through three states: normal maintenance, where both bug fixes and security fixes are backported; security maintenance, where only security fixes are; and eol, after which the ruby-core team makes no further patch releases.
Releases land every 25 December. In recent years normal maintenance has run about two years and three months, with roughly another year until EOL — an effective life of a little over three years, which is not long compared with other language runtimes.
Note that bug fixes stop when normal maintenance ends. A branch that is "not yet EOL" is not the same as one that is actively maintained; if you hit a Ruby bug during security maintenance, the fix will not come and the only route is the next branch.
Dates for newer branches are published as "TBD". The blank end dates for 4.0 and 3.4 on this page mean not announced, not unlimited support. Historically, expect a little over three years from release.
Ruby 3.3's EOL date is marked "(expected)" upstream and is not final; this is noted on its version page.
Ruby installed from a distribution package or via rbenv/rvm may continue receiving patches after upstream EOL. Check the distribution's life cycle separately.
