Support policy

Windows Server LTSC releases follow the Fixed Lifecycle Policy: five years of Mainstream Support followed by five years of Extended Support. Paid Extended Security Updates (ESU) may be offered for up to three additional years, announced per release.

Notes

Windows Server LTSC follows the Fixed Lifecycle Policy: five years of Mainstream Support plus five years of Extended Support — ten years in total.

During Extended Support only security updates are shipped; no new features and no non-security fixes. Paid Extended Security Updates (ESU) may follow for up to three years.

ESU is not automatic. Availability, pricing and duration are announced per release, typically as Extended Support nears its end. This site therefore shows null (not announced) for ESU on 2016 and later. Planning on "ten years plus three" is unsafe.

Windows Server 2012 R2 is the one release here with a confirmed ESU timeline: Extended Support ended 2023-10-10 and ESU ran three further years to 2026-10-13.

Only LTSC releases are listed. The Annual Channel targets container hosts, has a very different and much shorter lifecycle. Dates do not differ between Datacenter, Standard and Essentials editions.

Microsoft publishes these dates in Pacific Time.
